General Information

Quelimane is a seaport located in the Zambezia Province of Mozambique. It is the administrative capital, and largest city of the province.  It is approximately 25 km from the mouth of the Rio dos Bons Sinais, on the Indian Ocean.

Being one of the oldest settlements in the area, Quelimane has a lot of history attached to it.  Founded by the Portuguese as a trading station in 1544, the city has steadily grown over the years and now has one of the world's largest coconut plantations, with approximately 4,000,000 coconut palms.  The city is a major exporter of tea, sugar, maize, cotton and tobacco.

Fishing is an important industry in this area and is also a favourite tourist past-time.  The Avenida Marginal Cathedral is worth a visit, built in 1776 it is a beautiful building if a little rundown.  There is an excellent beach about an hours drive away from the city offering restaurants and bars.  Please see the activities directory for more information.
