Tete

General Information

Tete is situated on the bank of the Zambezi River near the coal mines of Moatize, in the Tete Province of Mozambique.  Under Portuguese rule Tete was predominantly a market centre for gold and ivory and became a city in 1959.  Tete is the largest city on the Zambezi and is known to be one of the hottest places in Mozambique, which discourages visitors to the city.  However, it is a useful transport hub.

There are many things to do in Tete and surrounds, some of which are as follows:-

  • The Tete Suspension Bridge - built at the end of the 1960's
  • Boroma Church - about 30 km from Tete
  • Cabora Bassa Dam - second largest dam in Africa and the fifth largest in the world
  • Kayaking

​The business community in Tete​ is steadily growing and being Mozambique's most inland town, it is an important centre for trade with central Africa.  Tourists will find many souvenirs, stalls, shops and local products.
